Contribute to Freewheels

Houston is a hub for Afghans resettling in the United States after they were evacuated from Kabul with the Taliban takeover. As they start new chapters of their lives in our community, many seek an alternative to walking, riding the bus or relying on others for transportation. We continue to give bikes veterans emerging from homelessness and middle school students from low-income families.

To meet rising demand for safe, reliable transportation, Freewheels Houston needs your donations to make sure we have parts, helmets, locks and lights for each person who receives a bike. We also need proper tools to get the job done and a clean and efficient shop in which to work.

Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to Freewheels today.

Bike donations

Although our goal is to accept all bike donations, our rented storage space is getting near its capacity. This has reduced our ability to accept donated bikes.

Our greatest need at this time is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels. Most of our adult recipients are of average height and weight, so XL bikes are not currently needed. Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers.

If a bike has been left outside for a long time or the handlebars, wheels, gears or derailleurs are damaged or have significant rust, we won’t be able to quickly repair it and prefer that it not be dropped off at our shop. We are happy to replace worn tires, seats or grips, but rusty or broken bikes are not worth the time or the cost of replacement parts. We don’t accept used helmets, smaller bikes, scooters or tag-alongs.

We receive donated bikes during our workdays every Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon at our warehouse at 6020 Jessamine #103, Houston, TX 77081 in southwest Houston.

Thanks for your help.
