A used bicycle can provide essential transportation to work or school
Since Freewheels Houston was established in 2015, Houstonians have been extremely generous and provided several hundred bikes for our program.
Our goal is to accept all types of bikes, bike parts and tools. Currently, however, our limited storage space is full. Our current need is for adult hybrid and mountain bikes with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We have an abundance of children’s bikes, which are not appropriate for our core mission of providing bikes to teenagers and adults who need transportation to work and school. We are exploring new channels to distribute bikes to children. Also, road bikes with narrow tires and drop handlebars are harder to distribute.
We receive bike donations during our work days on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at our warehouse at 6020 Jessamine #204, Houston, TX 77081 (southwest Houston near the intersection of Hillcroft and Bellaire).
Please complete the form (below) to let us know if you can drop bikes off during one of those times. If not, we can discuss other arrangements.
Donated bikes are evaluated by knowledgeable mechanics, repaired and cleaned.
If it’s not economic to repair a donated bike, we often reclaim parts and components from it that can be used on other bikes. However, it may not make sense for Freewheels to try to repair bikes that have been stored outside and that have extensive rust. The cost of replacement components and the time required for repair sometimes exceed our resources.
